The Alexandra Palace is the place to be this week as the Mosconi Cup returns to north London for the first time since 2018.
Taking place from 7-10 December this year’s tournament is the latest instalment of an annual pool showdown between Europe and USA dating back to 1994.
Team USA are desperate to take back the trophy having lost out to Europe in 2020 after two years of dominance, their 11-9 win in London in 2018 followed up a year later with an 11-8 victory at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. For the first time since 2013 the Americans include pool legend Earl Strickland in their ranks. Nicknamed ‘the Pearl’, Strickland is considered one of the best nine-ball pool players of all time and has an incredible nine Mosconi Cup titles to his name, a record he holds jointly with fellow countryman Johnny Archer. This week Strickland goes on the hunt for a historic tenth under the guidance of captain Jeremy Jones and vice-captain Shane Van Boening.
Team Europe will be in no mood to relinquish the trophy they won emphatically last year, beating their USA counterparts 11-3 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. 2020 MVP Jayson Shaw was captain Alex Lely’s first wild card pick joining Austria’s Albin Ouschan and David Alcaide from Spain. They’re joined by 22-year-old Eklent Kaçi, part of Europe’s winning side last December and making his fourth Mosconi Cup appearance, and Germany’s Joshua Filler.
The top five players from Team Europe and Team USA are all set for four days of world-class sporting action in pool’s most intimidating arena. Will Europe retain the trophy on home soil, or will USA upset the party and take the pool spoils back to America? All roads lead to the famous Alexandra Palace this week to find out.
