⚽️ Arsenal Women welcome Manchester United Women to Meadow Park in a must-win match for the home side if they are to maintain their bid to win consecutive WSL titles. Kick-off is at 2pm.
Arsenal Women scratched a seven-year itch last April when a 4-0 win against Brighton at Amex Stadium – in front of a then record Women’s Super League crowd of 5,265 – saw the north London side win the title they had last captured in 2012 with a game to spare.
Aiming to make it two WSL titles in a row Arsenal reached the end of 2019 in fine form, joint-top of the table. However back-to-back defeats in 2020 against title rivals Chelsea and Manchester City – the first a sobering 1-4 home reverse followed by a 2-1 defeat away to City – cast doubts over Arsenal’s title credentials. Now four points adrift of Man City who are top, and three points behind second-placed Chelsea, Arsenal Women know nothing other than a win today will do.
Manchester United Women are fourth in the WSL table having taken 23 points from their fourteen matches. With a clutch of teams just behind them – including Tottenham, Reading and Everton – the Manchester side have plenty of incentive to spring a surprise at Meadow Park and Arsenal will not take them lightly.
Previous league meeting: 15 September at Leigh Sports Village. A dramatic late goal from Arsenal’s Danielle van de Donk securing a 1-0 victory for the visitors.
One to watch: Vivianne Miedema. Arsenal Women’s top scorer last season has somehow taken her game to a new level during this campaign, already past the 20 goals mark including two goals in Arsenal’s recent 3-2 road win over Liverpool and a six-goal haul in December when Arsenal racked up the biggest win in WSL history beating Bristol City 11-1.

🚊 🚗 Travel tips: Meadown Park is a 15-minute walk from Elstree and Borehamwood railway station which is in Zone 6 and served by trains from London St Pancras (circa 25 minutes) to the south and St Albans and Luton to the north. If driving there is parking available on the residential streets in the vicinity of the ground.
About the Super League: The FA Women’s Super League (FA WSL) is the top tier of women’s club football in England. Featuring 12 teams it was established in April 2011 and runs from September to May. The winner and runner-up in the league qualify to play in the UEFA Women’s Champions League the following season while the team finishing bottom are relegated to the Championship. The current FA WSL champions are Arsenal Women.
Teams in the Super League also take part in the SSE Women’s FA Cup which is open to all clubs competing in the top seven tiers of the women’s football pyramid in England. The current cup holders are Mancester City. Arsenal Women are the most successful cup team with 14 wins overall.
FA WSL teams also compete in FA Women’s Continental League Cup ealong with teams from the Championship.
The FA WSL teams for the 2019-20 season are the women’s teams of Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Birmingham City, Bristol City, Reading, West Ham, Liverpool, Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton, Tottenham and Manchester United.
In the London area there are 4 teams of interest: Chelsea (playing their home games at Kingsmeadow, Kingston-upon-Thames), Arsenal (Meadow Park, Borehamwood), West Ham (Rush Green Stadium, Romford) and Tottenham (The Hive, Edgware).
