Glasgow Gaels

Glasgow Gaels v John Mitchels Liverpool

North of Britain Championship.  Glasgow Gaels take on John Mitchels Liverpool at Peterson Park in a key match for the home side.  Throw up is at 2pm with free admission for spectators.

Glasgow Gaels are relatively new to the GAA scene but have enjoyed plenty of success so far.  In 2015 they won the Scottish Junior Championship after which they advanced all the way to the All-Britain final where they lost by just 4 points to Oisin Manchester.  The Gaels stayed in Junior competition in 2016, winning the Scottish again and then the All-Britain final versus John Mitchels (Birmingham).  They were successful against the European Champions Belgium and then unfortunately lost to St. Maurs (Dublin) in the All-Ireland Quarter Final.

This year the Glasgow Gaels have been promoted to Intermediate competition (the top division of Ladies Gaelic Football in Britain) meaning Scotland now has two teams at that level, the other being the establised Dunedin Connollys.

Both sides are in action today in the North of Britain Championship – Connollys take on Oisin Manchester also at 2pm – with the four teams playing each other on a home and away basis to decide the top two who will face-off in a British semi-final versus the top two sides in the London Intermediate Championships, with the latter matches deciding who progresses into the All-Britain Competition later this season.  The ultimate winner of the All-Britain Competition will then advance to the All-Ireland Competition.

Glasgow Gaels come into today’s match on the back of a narrow reverse to Connollys, losing by 3-07 to 3-10 to their Scottish rivals.  John Mitchels Liverpool have also played just the one match so far, a 2-17 4-11 draw against the aforementioned Connollys.

Three games have already taken place in the North of Britain Championship with 2 points on offer for a win and 1 point for a draw.  Scores as follows which include goals first (worth 3 points) and then points, home team listed first:-

Gaels 3-07 (16) to Dunedin Connollys 3-10 (19)
Oisin CLG (Manchester) 3-13 (22) to Gaels 2-02 (8)
John Mitchels 2-17 (23) to Connollys 4-11 (23)

Current standings in the North of Britain Championship are as follows:-

1. Connollys 3 points ~ 2. Oisin CLG 2 points ~ 3. John Mitchels 1 point ~ 4. Gaels 0 points.

Throw in at 2pm.

Spectating is free.
