CONGRATULATIONS to National Hunt star Jonbon who signed off his jumps season in style with a front-running performance to win the Celebration Chase. Ridden by Nico de Boinville and trained by Nicky Henderson, Jonbon was imperious at the Jump Finale when registering back-to-back wins in the Celebration.
Later in the day, Minella Cocooner took the spoils in the Gold Cup with Danny Mullins on board. It was a fitting win for trainer Willie Mullins who earlier in the meeting had secured the title of British champion trainer when El Fabiolo had finished second to Jonbon in the Celebration Chase. Mullins became the first Irish-based trainer to win the title since Vincent O’Brien 70 years ago. On a memorable day of action at Sandown, Harry Cobden received the champion jockey trophy for the first time. Cobden finished the season with 164 wins, 7 ahead of his closest rival Sean Bowen.
2024 RACEDAY PREVIEW
The thrill of the jumps, an electric atmosphere and a crowning of champions. A fantastic day of horse racing is in store at Sandown Park this afternoon as the Jump Finale brings the National Hunt season to a close.
In 2023 Kitty’s Light achieved a rare double claiming the coveted Gold Cup just seven days after winning the Scottish Grand National. Ridden by Jack Tudor and trained by Christian Williams the chaser followed in the hoofsteps of Irish raider Hewick who won the race the previous year. Hewick was back at Sandown in 2023, taking the honours in the Grade Two Oaksey Chase with Rachael Blackmore on board. Paul Nicholls enjoyed a day to remember the becoming champion jump trainer for the 14th time. As did Brian Hughes, crowned the champion jump jockey. What will this year bring? All roads lead to Sandown Park to find out!
BIG RACE ACTION & LIVE MUSIC
A seven-race Jump Finale card includes the Celebration Chase over two miles at 1.40pm. With a prize pot of £150,000 at stake this Grade 1 (aka best of the best) race saw the mighty Altior truimph in 2019. Altior won for the third consecutive year and in so doing took his extraordinary winning streak to 19 consecutive races.
At 2.15pm it’s the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase. A big field of top horses is expected to compete for the £80,000+ first prize and the famous trophy. Two other Grade 2 races on the card and over half a million in prize money expected to be at stake on the day will ensure the best horses, jockeys and trainers in the UK are in attendance.
There’s also the crowning of the champions to enjoy before racing (see below) and once the racing has finished live music from the Chip Shop Boys!
CROWNING OF THE CHAMPIONS
The final jumps fixture of the season also marks the crowning of champions. The Champion Jockey, Conditional Jockey, Champion Trainer and Owner. As is tradition the ceremonies will take place before racing starts. Arrive early to see who will follow in the footsteps of famous names such as A P McCoy and Richard Johnson (champions jockeys) and Bryony Frost (conditional jockey champion) and champion trainers Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson.
This year’s trainers championship could not be closer! Current champion Paul Nicholls is in a three-way battle with Willie Mullins and Dan Skelton to take the coveted prize.

🚊🚗 Travel tips: Free car parking is available in the centre of the racecourse accessible from the More Lane entrance. Parking in the main Sandown Park car park off Portsmouth Road costs £5. Use the train if travelling by public transport from central London. Esher railway station is nearest to the course and a 30-minute journey from London Waterloo. Access the main entrance to the racecourse by crossing the centre of the course. Note: Esher station is located outside of Zones 1-6 and paper ticket should be purchased as Oyster Cards are not valid. For train times visit the National Rail website or call 08457 48 49 50.
