Some of the best racehorses in history have won the King George including Nijinsky, Shergar, Dancing Brave and Galileo and in 2020 Ascot welcomed back the much-loved defending champion Enable.  The extraordinary mare did not disappoint recording a third King George title.

In 2021 Derby winner Adayar confirmed his classy credentials to take first prize.  Charlie Appleby’s colt, a son of Frankel, becoming the first horse since Galileo in 2001 to complete the Derby-King George VI double.

Last year Calandagan was the winner of the big race.  The French star was the 11-10 favourite.  Ridden by Mickael Barzalona and trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, he swooped in the final stages to claim first prize.  Kalpana came second with Rebel Romance finishing in third place.  Calandagan would go on to win the Japan Cup and the Champions Stakes before being crowned the world’s best racecourse at the 2026 Longines World’s Best Racecourse Awards.

History was made in 2025 with prize money for the King George increased to £1,500,000.  The race became the richest ever run at Ascot.  Another record prize pot is anticipated in 2026 to ensure a highly-competitive field at the iconic race.
