INTRODUCTION – WOMEN’S SUPER LEAGUE LONDON TEAMS

Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are the FA Women’s Super League (WSL) London teams taking part in the WSL 2023/2024 season

Chelsea (pictured below) are defending the title after sealing a fourth consecutive WSL title on the final day of last season with a 2-0 win over Reading.  Manchester United finished runners-up with Arsenal in third place.  Chelsea also added the Women’s FA Cup to their haul (beating Manchester United in the final) but were thwarted in their pursuit of a domestic treble losing 3-1 to Arsenal in the final of the Continental League Cup.  A win that marked the first trophy in four years for the Gunners.

SEASON SO FAR

After 21 rounds of matches in the 2023/2024 WSL season it’s a shootout between champions Chelsea and Manchester City for title glory.  City (who blew the title race apart with their 1-0 road win over Chelsea in March) are top of the table on 52 points with one game remaining – away at Aston Villa on the final day of the season.  Chelsea are in second place – on 49 points – with their game in hand against Tottenham on Wednesday 14 May followed by a visit to Manchester United.  The Blues have a marginally better goal difference, which could be key.

Arsenal’s title dreams are over after last month’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of Chelsea.  However, the  Gunners are still battling hard and shocked leaders Manchester City with a come-from-behind 2-1 win at the weekend.  The Gunners are in third place with Champions League football assured for next season.

The race to finish fourth is a shootout between Liverpool and Manchester United.  Tottenham Hotspur are sixth in the table after three consecutive draws.  The north Londoners are in a buoyant mood following their recent semi-final win over Leicester City in the Women’s FA Cup.  They meet Manchester United in the final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 12 May.  West Ham United are in eleventh place, on 15 points.  The Hammers are 9 points ahead of Bristol City who have been relegated.

MATCH OF THE WEEK

Chelsea almost certainly have to beat Tottenham Hotspur to keep their title dreams alive when the two sides meet on Wednesday 15 May.  By doing the Blues will set up a grandstand finale to the season on Saturday 18 May.  The final round of matches sees Chelsea travel to Manchester United while Manchester City visit Aston Villa.

ONES TO WATCH

A host of England’s star players from last summer’s Women’s World Cup finals are in action for teams in the capital.  England captain Millie Bright along with Lauren James and Jess Carter are part of a Chelsea side who also have Australian star Sam Kerr in their ranks.  Meanwhile Beth England is key to Tottenham’s progress.  Across London striker Alessio Russo joined Arsenal from Manchester United in the summer.  Russo has been joined by two Lionesses returning from injury in the shape of Leah Williamson and Beth Mead.  Both players who had a huge part in England’s historic EURO 2022 triumph.

SEASON SO FAR: Twenty one rounds of matches are now complete in the Women’s Championship.  The title and automatic promotion is up for grabs with just 6 points separating the top three sides.  Crystal Palace are top on 45 points, with south London rivals Charlton Athletic in second place on 42 points.  Sunderland and Southampton are in third and fourth place on 40 and 39 points respectively.

London City Lionesses are eighth in the table after an erratic season.  However, they will be buoyed by their recent 1-0 upset win over then leaders Sunderland, part of a three-match winning streak.  The Lionesses are a side to watch out for having been purchased by American businesswoman Michele Kang earlier this season.  Kang has a multi-team women’s football organisation that also includes US side Washington Spirit and French team Olympique Lyonnais Féminin.
