1872 Scottish Cup. Edinburgh Rugby v Glasgow Warriors

Known throughout the rugby world as the oldest club fixture in history, the 1872 Scottish Cup is one of the most eagerly anticipated dates on the Scottish rugby calendar and this year’s version is set to be as intense as any encounter to date.

The first leg at took place on 21 December at Scotstoun.  Glasgow Warriors winning a spicy encounter 20-16 in a match that leapt to life late on with a flurry of tries and ultimately settled by George Turner’s touch down for the hosts with just five minutes left on the clock.

Today’s match is the middle fixture in this year’s 1872 Cup series that will conclude on the final day of the season (30 May) when Edinburgh and Glasgow will once again cross swords at Murrayfield.

Edinburgh Rugby took the spoils in 2018, a 16-8 win at Scotsoun in the final match of the year bringing up a third successive derby victory over their Glasgow rivals and with it the silverware having won 23-7 at Scotstoun the previous weekend to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.  Rest assured Glasgow Warriors will be after revenge – as demonstrated in last week’s first leg – having seen their rivals from Edinburgh enjoy the majority of bragging rights in recent years.

A bumper 1872 Scottish Cup crowd will be at Murrayfield and a noisy atmosphere guaranteed for what should be an enthralling game of rugby featuring many of the players who will represent Scotland in next spring’s Six Nations.  Book your tickets now to be part of a festive afternoon of rugby to savour.
