1872 Scottish Cup

1872 Scottish Cup. Edinburgh Rugby v Glasgow Warriors

A pre-Christmas rugby union cracker sees Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors go head-to-head under the BT Murrayfield floodlights in the first leg of the 1872 Scottish Cup.  Kick-off is at 5.10pm and tickets are available.

Known throughout the rugby world as the oldest club fixture in history, the 1872 Scottish Cup is one of the most eagerly anticipated dates on the Scottish rugby calendar and this year’s version is set to be the most intense encounter yet.  Having broken a 5-year losing streak in 2014 Edinburgh Rugby retained the trophy the following year only for Glasgow Warriors to take the bragging rights last season including a 25-12 win at Murrayfield.

Edinburgh Rugby are flying under new head coach Richard Cockerill having wracked up a string of victories in the PRO14 not to mention in the European Challenge Cup.  For their part Glasgow Warriors (who will be captained by Jonny Gray, full team below) will be itching to get a recent European Champions Cup exit out of their system and what better time to do so than against their fierce rivals in the PRO14 where Dave Rennie’s men have been at their best so far this season not losing a match.

It would be no surprise to see a record 1872 Scottish Cup crowd at Murrayfield with a noisy atmosphere guaranteed for what should be an enthralling game of rugby with many of Scotland’s national team (Edinburgh alone have named 7 internationalists in their team which is in full below) on show.

For the first time this season the 1872 Cup is following a “best of three” format in parallel with the expanded PRO14 league.  The second leg at Scotstoun next Saturday is already sold out with a final meeting of the sides scheduled for the weekend of the 28th April once again at Murrayfield

It’s all set up for a great game of rugby.  Get your 1872 Scottish Cup first leg ticket now and prepare to strap yourselves in for a festive evening of rugby to remember!
