It’s official.  Athletics in London will wave goodbye to 2024 with a 5k/Mile special courtesy of Podium 5k Battersea.  Mile races will take place on the Battersea Park Millennium Arena ahead of two eagerly anticipated 5k showdowns in the park.

ELITE MILE RACE

RESULT: CONGRATULATIONS to Jack Higgins who claimed victory in the 1 Mile Male/Female Challenge taking first place in time of 4:37.65 and net time of 4:06.35.  Tom Dodd was just a fraction of a second behind, with Ted Higgins making up the podium places.  The first female home was Holly Dixon (in 5th place overall) in a time of 4:45.90, followed by Jorjia March in a stunning U15 Girls time of 4:50.90 (6th place overall).

Starting at 2.30pm, all eyes will be on the elite-level Mizuno Mile on the track in Battersea Park.  It’s a race with a difference featuring women against men, but only one prize.  The women get a 31-second start.  Holly Dixon (PB 4:35) will fancy her chances.  But Tom Dodd (PB 4:00) will have other ideas as he targets a sub-4 minute mile to round off the year.

ELITE 5k RACES

Men’s

RESULT: CONGRATULATIONS to Tomer Tarragano who lived up to his pre-race billing to win the Men’s Elite 5k!  Tarragano crossed the line in a time of 13:49.0, just ahead of Thomas Keen who finished in second place in 13:49.3.  Joseph Tuffin was third in 13:52.7.  38 runners clocked a sub-15 finish time.

From the track to the park, the Men’s Elite 5k at 2.55pm will have 80+ runners on the start line.  A sub-14 minute run is essential to be in the mix.  Tomer Tarragano (PB 13:44), fresh from his victory at Liverpool Cross Challenge (main picture above) and representing GB at Euro Cross looks the man to beat.  But will he meet his match against Tom Keen (PB 14:07) who is back to defend his Podium title?

Women’s

RESULT: CONGRATULATIONS to Team GB’s Revée Walcott-Nolan who took first place in the Women’s Elite 5k!  The 1500m specialist broke the tape in a time of 15:39, followed home by Poppy Tank in 15:44.  Mia Waldmann completed the podium places in a time of 15:53.

Rounding off proceedings, the Women’s Elite 5k at 3.30pm is set to feature Olympic 1500m bronze medallist Georgia Bell.  In a year like no other Bell has become the UK 1500m champion, won silver at the European Athletics championships and claimed a memorable bronze medal at the Paris Olympics in a British record time of 3:52.61.

Bell is no stranger to Battersea Park.  Back in April she enjoyed success on the track in south west London, taking the spoils at Comeback 5000 in a PB time of 15:35.  Her main threats at Podium 5k Battersea are likely to come from two-time Olympian Revée Walcott-Nolan and rising star Innes FitzGerald

Walcott-Nolan and Bell (both pictured below) were Team GB teammates at the Paris Olympics and have endured numerous battles over 1500m on the track this season.  Meanwhile, FitzGerald is fresh from winning back-to-back U20 titles at Euro Cross earlier this month.  The Exeter-based runner has a 5k PB of 15:30.  Let battle commence!
