60,000+ fans are expected in north London this evening when Great Britain’s Anthony Joshua puts his IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles on the line against Oleksandr Usyk. Both men have incredible amateur pedigree having won Olympic gold at the London 2012 Olympics, and tonight they clash in the professional ranks in a highly-anticipated encounter.
Anthony Joshua hasn’t fought since last December when he secured a knockout win over Bulgaria’s Kubrat Pulev in the ninth round at The SSE Arena, Wembley. His first fight fight on UK soil since he stopped the dangerous Alexander Povetkin in seven rounds at Wembley Stadium back in September 2018.
Unified champion and a stellar attraction in the heavyweight division tonight is Joshua’s fifth stadium fight. He will be looking to create more history when facing Usyk, the WBO mandatory challenger, at the state of the art home of Tottenham Hotspur football club.
Ukrainian pound-for-pound star Oleksandr Usyk made the move up to the heavyweight ranks after dominating the cruiserweight division and having seen off world-class opposition in the form of Marco Huck, Mairis Briedis, Murat Gassiev and Tony Bellew.
Usyk has already made his mark among the heavyweights by retiring USA’s Chazz Witherspoon before outpointing the teak tough and former world title challenger Dereck Chisora last October. Now the formidable presence of Joshua stands in the way of Usyk of becoming a two-weight world champion.
“The date is set and we are fully locked in,” said Joshua when the fight was announced. “September 25, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, I put it all on the line again and it’s time to defend my crown. We are two Olympic gold medallists who have fought our way to the top and never avoided challenges.
“The stadium is exceptional, the atmosphere will be electric, I’m honoured to be the first person to fight in such an awe-inspiring venue. The stage is set and I am ready to handle business.”
