Surrey County Cricket Club start the defence of their County Championship Division One title with a visit from Essex to the Kia Oval. Play on Day 3 starts at 11am and tickets are available.
2018 was a memorable year for Surrey who captured their first Championship title since 2002. An impressive team including the likes of Ben Foakes, Sam Curran and Rory Burns (all now internationals) has been bolstered in readiness for the new season by the addition of England international Liam Plunkett who joined from Yorkshire.
With Surrey due to lose players to Ashes and World Cup duty over the summer it will be far from easy for the Kennington-based side to retain their title however Alex Stewart’s signing of Plunkett is a statement of intent to the rest of the league.
Last season was a disappointment for Essex after they failed to recapture the form that saw them win the Division One trophy in 2017 immediately after promotion to the top league. But led by the one and only Sir Alastair Cook, now retired from international duties, they are sure to be a force to be reckoned with this year.
Ones to watch: Liam Plunkett for Surrey. With over 100 England caps Plunkett does not lack for experience but will surely have butterflies as he bids to impress in front of a home crowd on his first outing for Surrey. And it’s harder to think of a tougher opponent on debut than Essex’s Alastair Cook, England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer.
Play starts at 11am.
