🏏 The Rothesay County Championship Division One season continues in the capital with high-flying Surrey in action against Hampshire at the Kia Oval. The four-day match is scheduled for Sunday 7 to Wednesday 10 June. Read on for a preview and how to purchase tickets.
Surrey made history in 2024 becoming the first team to win three Country Championship titles in a row for 56 years. It was their 23rd title. However, the quadruple eluded the Three Feathers last season who finished runners-up to Nottinghamshire. Now the challenge is on to see if Surrey can make it four wins in five season. Can they do it? Surrey open their County Championship season away to Warwickshire on the Easter Weekend. Then all eyes be on the Kia Oval which hosts four home matches in April, May and June. Leicestershire, Essex, Sussex and Hampshire are the visitors (full schedule below). After a break, red-ball action will return to the Oval in August.
Newsflash 4 May: Surrey are up second in the table following an eight-wicket victory over Sussex. The south London side opened their season with a hat-trick of draws against Warwickshire, Leicestershire and Essex before upping the ante against Sussex. The Three Feathers prevailed on the final day at the Oval to claim 22 points and move on to a total of 59 points. Leaders Nottinghamshire are on 67 points. Next up Surrey welcome fourth-placed Hampshire– who are bottom of the table at the time of writing – to SE11. Match starts on Sunday 10 June.
ONES TO WATCH
Captain Rory Burns has led Surrey to four County Championship titles and registered over 12,000 first-class runs. Burns, together with vice-captain Dom Sibley, make up a formidable opening pair in the batting. They lead a strong nucleus of experienced players in the Surrey team this season.
Gus Atkinson has impressed for England with his bowling since his debut in 2024. He’s also a key part of Surrey’s attack taking 23 wickets in 2025. Dan Worrall notched up 32 wickets last season. With Atkinson expected to be on regular international duties, Worrall will once again be a key part of the Surrey bowling this season. Jamie Smith is a standout wicketkeeper-batter who led Surrey’s County Championship batting averages last season scoring 677 runs at an average of 56. Smith was also named one of Wisden Cricketers of the Year for 2025.
Ten teams in total feature in Division One. Surrey are joined by Durham, Essex, Glamorgan, Hampshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Somerset, Sussex and Warwickshire.
