Chelsea FC Women welcome Lyon Féminines to Kingsmeadow for the second leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final encounter. Kick-off is at 2pm and tickets are available.
Chelsea FC Women made it a ‘double double’ last year repeating their exploits of 2015 when they followed up a FA Women’s Cup triumph by winning the WSL title. However the Blues have not had things their own way this season on the domestic front lying third in the Super League table behind Manchester City Women and Arsenal and suffering an agonising Women’s FA Cup exit in the semi-finals against the aforementioned Manchester City. A late own goal by Chelsea’s Magdalena Eriksson settling the tie.
On the European front it’s been a different story for Chelsea reaching the last four of the UWCL for only the second time in their history. A quarter-final victory over Paris Saint-Germain secured in dramatic circumstances when Maren Mjelde scored in second leg injury time to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory in favour of the London side.
Tonight’s opponents Lyon Féminines made sure of their place in the semi-finals after they defeated last season’s beaten finalists Wolfsburg 6-3 on aggregate.
The sides met in the first leg last Sunday in Lyon in front of a crowd of nearly 23,000. At 2-0 down things had looked bleak for the Blues however Erin Cuthbert’s second-half goal saw the match finish 2-1 in favour of the home side.
That result means Chelsea FC Women will progress to the final (on 18 May in Budapest) if they can secure a 1-0 result this afternoon, or otherwise win by two goals or more.
It’s all set up at Kingsmeadow for an afternoon of European drama. Will Chelsea make history by reaching their first UWCL Final? Get your ticket now to find out!
One to watch: Chelsea’s Ji So-yun. The South Korean midfielder is a sublime playmaker and has continued her good form of last season that saw her nominated for the PFA Women’s Player of the Year.
