MATCH PREVIEW
It was so near yet so far last July when England lost 2-1 to Spain in the final of EURO 2024, to follow their penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the EURO 2020 final which denied England men at Wembley Stadium a first major international trophy since 1966. And in between the sense of déjà vu continued in Qatar in December 2022. Gareth Southgate’s side went out of the FIFA World Cup losing 2-1 to champions France at the quarter-final stage.
Onwards and upwards a new era is underway with former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel taking his place as Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor. This after interim boss Lee Carsley led England to promotion from League B, Group 2 in the UEFA Nations League. Promotion sealed with a flourish courtesy of a 5-0 win over Republic of Ireland last November.
Now attention turns to the FIFA World Cup and qualifying for the 2026 tournament taking place in Canada, Mexico and the United States of America.
