It was so near yet so far last July when England lost 2-1 to Spain in the final of EURO 2024, to follow their penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the EURO 2020 final which denied England men at Wembley Stadium a first major international trophy since 1966. And in between the sense of déjà vu continued in Qatar in December 2022 as Gareth Southgate’s side went out of the FIFA World Cup losing 2-1 to champions France at the quarter-final stage.
Onwards and upwards a new era awaits with the news that interim manager Lee Carsley will step down at the end of the year and former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel will take his place as Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor. Before that England continue their bid for promotion from League B, Group 2 in the UEFA Nations League as they take on Republic of Ireland on Sunday 17 November under the lights at Wembley Stadium.
At the time of writing the Three Lions are second in the table behind leaders Greece. England’s progress was halted by Greece who beat them 2-1 on home soil at the beginning of October. Now up against it, nothing but a win will do for Lee Carsley’s side against Republic of Ireland.
