It was so near yet so far in July 2021 when a penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the EURO 2020 final denied the England men at Wembley Stadium a first major international trophy since 1966. And the sense of déjà vu continued in Qatar in December 2022 as Gareth Southgate’s side went out of the FIFA World Cup losing 2-1 to champions France at the quarter-final stage.
But onwards and upwards attention turns now to EURO 2024 for the Three Lions who qualified as Group C winners, with Italy in second place. England turned in some notable performances during the group stages, including a 2-1 victory away to Italy. They followed that up with a 2-0 home win over Ukraine in which Captain Harry Kane added to his all-time goal scoring record – notching up goal number 55 for the national side – before rising star Bukayo Saka scored a beauty in the top corner.
This month England face Brazil and Belgium at Wembley Stadium to complete their preparations for EURO 2024 in the summer. The match against the famous Brazilian national side is the first time the sides have met since they shared a 0-0 draw in 2017.
Can England make it back-to-back wins against two powerhouses in world football? All roads lead to the home of football to find out!
