2025/2026 Women’s Super League: Match of the week ~ London City Lionesses v Brighton & Hove Albion

⚽️ The Women’s Super League season continues with a showdown between in-form London City Lionesses and Brighton & Hove Albion at the Copperjax Community Stadium on Sunday 7 December.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and London City Lionesses are the five London teams taking part in the 2025/2026 Women’s Super League (WSL) season. 

Chelsea are the defending champions after they lifted the Women’s Super League trophy for a sixth consecutive season on the final day of the 2024/2025 season.  The Blues became the first WSL team to be undefeated in a a 22-game season.  Sonia Bompastor, Chelsea’s head coach, enjoyed a stellar debut season.  The Stamford Bridge side claimed a domestic treble following their 3-0 win over Manchester United in the Women’s Fa Cup final.  Arsenal were WSL runners-up and Manchester United finished in third place.  The Gunners closed the season in history-making style beating Barcelona 1-0 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final.

SEASON SO FAR

Manchester City are top of the league after a superb start to the season.  Eight wins from 9 matches has seen City collect 24 points.  Hot on their heels are champions Chelsea.  The Blues, on 21 points, have dropped down to second after two consecutive draws.  Manchester United are in third place on 17 points, closely followed by Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and newly-promoted London City Lionesses who are all within two points of the Red Devils.  West Ham United climbed off the foot of the table following a 3-1 win over Everton last time out.  Liverpool are bottom.

ONES TO WATCH – Women’s Super League London teams

A host of England’s star players will be in action for teams in the capital.  Lionesses captain Leah Williamson will once again lead Arsenal after captaining England’s women to EURO 2025 glory.  Joining Williamson is fellow England star Chloe Kelly who scored the winning penalty against Spain.  Beth Mead, Alessia Russo and Lotte Wubben-Moy complete a strong contingent of England players in the Arsenal ranks.

Chelsea also field a formidable contingent of Lionesses in their squad including forward Lauren James and standout goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.  They are joined by Lucy Bronzewho last season returned to the WSL after two years at Barcelona – along with Keira Walsh, Niamh Charles and Aggie Beever-Jones.

Michelle Agyemang – named UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 Young Player of the Tournament – has rejoined Brighton on loan from Arsenal for the 2025/2025 WSL season.  Expect Agyemang to make a mark in her breakout year when she comes up against the likes of Chelsea, London City Lionesses, Tottenham and West Ham in the capital.

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic are the teams representing the capital in the 2025/2026 Barclays Women’s Championship season.  Palace play at VBS Community Stadium in Sutton.  Charlton are based at The Oakwood in Crayford.

2024/2025 SEASON RECAP: London City Lionesses were champions!  Bought in 2023 by Michele Kang – who also owns Washington Spirit and Lyon’s women’s team – the Lionesses clinched promotion on the final day of the season with a 2-2 draw away to promotion rivals Birmingham City

Charlton Athletics finished in a creditable third place and will have their sights set on a bid for promotion in season 2025/2026.
