London City Lionesses v Arsenal

⚽️ The Women’s Super League returns after a mid-season break with a capital derby featuring London City Lionesses against Arsenal at Copperjax Community Stadium on Sunday 15 March.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and London City Lionesses are the five London teams taking part in the 2025/2026 Women’s Super League (WSL) season. 

Chelsea are the defending champions after they lifted the Women’s Super League trophy for a sixth consecutive season on the final day of the 2024/2025 season.  The Blues became the first WSL team to be undefeated in a a 22-game season.  Sonia Bompastor, Chelsea’s head coach, enjoyed a stellar debut season.  The Stamford Bridge side claimed a domestic treble following their 3-0 win over Manchester United in the Women’s Fa Cup final.  Arsenal were WSL runners-up and Manchester United finished in third place.  The Gunners closed the season in history-making style beating Barcelona 1-0 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final.

SEASON SO FAR

Manchester City are top of the league after a superb season so far, including a 5-1 rout of champions Chelsea.  Fourteen wins from 16 matches has seen City collect 42 points.  They are hot favourites to win the title.  The battle for Champions League football next season (second place guarantees automatic qualification while third place provides a potential route via a play-off) is fierce.  Chelsea have slipped down to 3rd place on 33 points, one point behind second-placed Manchester United.  North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are in 4th and 5th place respectively.  Both sides are on 29 points. 

Newly-promoted London City Lionesses are in 6th place after a 2-1 defeat at Manchester United last time out.  West Ham United are in 10th place, on 11 points, with Liverpool just a point behind them.  It’s congested at the bottom with Leicester City propping up the table in 9 points.

ONES TO WATCH – Women’s Super League London teams

A host of England’s star players will be in action for teams in the capital.  Lionesses captain Leah Williamson will once again lead Arsenal after captaining England’s women to EURO 2025 glory.  Joining Williamson is fellow England star Chloe Kelly who scored the winning penalty against Spain.  Beth Mead, Alessia Russo and Lotte Wubben-Moy complete a strong contingent of England players in the Arsenal ranks.

Chelsea also field a formidable contingent of Lionesses in their squad including forward Lauren James and standout goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.  They are joined by Lucy Bronzewho last season returned to the WSL after two years at Barcelona – along with Keira Walsh, Niamh Charles and Aggie Beever-Jones.

Michelle Agyemang – named UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 Young Player of the Tournament – has rejoined Brighton on loan from Arsenal for the 2025/2025 WSL season.  Expect Agyemang to make a mark in her breakout year when she comes up against the likes of Chelsea, London City Lionesses, Tottenham and West Ham in the capital.

WOMEN’S SUPER LEAGUE 2

Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic are the teams representing the capital in the 2025/2026 Barclays WSL2.  Palace play at VBS Community Stadium in Sutton.  Charlton are based at The Oakwood in Crayford. 

Heading towards March, Charlton are top of the WSL2 table on 38 points and hot favourites for automatic promotion.  Palace are in third place, a point behind second-placed Birmingham City.

Three teams from WSL2 will be promoted at the end of the season, to enable WSL’s expansion from 12 to 14 teams next season.  The top two will be automatically promoted.  The third-placed team will face the WSL’s bottom club in a one-legged relegation/promotion play-off to decide the final spot.

2024/2025 SEASON RECAP: London City Lionesses were champions!  Bought in 2023 by Michele Kang – who also owns Washington Spirit and Lyon’s women’s team – the Lionesses clinched promotion on the final day of the season with a 2-2 draw away to promotion rivals Birmingham City

Charlton Athletic finished in a creditable third place and will have their sights set on a bid for promotion in season 2025/2026.
