2024/2025 UEFA Women’s Champions League: Match of the week ~ Chelsea v Barcelona

⚽️ High-stakes European football awaits as Chelsea and Barcelona go head-to-head in the semi-finals of the Women’s UEFA Champions League at Stamford Bridge on Sunday 27 April.

INTRODUCTION – WOMEN’S SUPER LEAGUE LONDON TEAMS

Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and newly-promoted Crystal Palace are the five London teams taking part in the 2024/2025 Women’s Super League (WSL) season.

Chelsea (pictured below) are the defending champions after they lifted the Women’s Super League trophy for a fifth consecutive season on a dramatic last day of the 2023/2024 season.  The Blues retained their WSL title with a stunning 6-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.  Emma Hayes’ final game in charge after 12 years at the Chelsea helm.  Manchester City fluffed their lines in a tense title run-in, allowing Chelsea to snatch the title.  City finished runners-up with Arsenal in third.  All three sides qualified for the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The 2023/2024 cup silverware went to Manchester United and Arsenal.  Manchester United won the Women’s FA Cup with a 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.  Arsenal lifted the Women’s League Cup, beating their London rivals Chelsea 1-0 in the final.

SEASON SO FAR

The 2024/2025 WSL is approaching the business end and it’s so far so good for the defending champions Chelsea who are top of the league.  The Blues are are on 48 points, 3 clear of nearest rivals Arsenal who have played game more.  Manchester United ware in third place on 43 points.  Sonia Bompastor, Chelsea’s head coach, will be delighted with her sides record in the league since she took over, with fifteen wins and two draws so far.  Manchester City remain in the hunt (just) for Champions League football next season.  City are in fourth place, 7 points behind their Manchester rivals.

Tottenham Hotspur are in ninth place on 18 points.  West Ham United leapfrogged their London rivals with a 2-0 win over Spurs last time out.  The Hammers are on 20 points.

Crystal Palace are in a relegation dogfight.  The Eagles are bottom of the table on 9 points, seven points adrift of Aston Villa immediately above them.  But the Eagles aren’t going down without a fight.  They beat the Villans 3-1 earlier this month to boost their survival hopes.

Coming up on Sunday 27 April, all eyes will be on Stamford Bridge as Chelsea and Barcelona meet in the second leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final.  Chelsea have it all to do after losing the first leg 4-1 at the Estadi Johan Cruyff.

Sunday 10 May: Chelsea v Liverpool KO 12.30pm.  Arsenal v Manchester United KO 12.30pm.

ONES TO WATCH – Women’s Super League london teams

Former Manchester City striker Hayley Raso returns to the WSL with Tottenham Hotspur.  The Australian international scored three times as her national side reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2023.  Katie Stengel has joined Crystal Palace from Gotham City.  Stengel has form in the WSL having scored 17 goals for Liverpool during the 2022/2023 season.  28-year-old Spanish winger Mariona Caldentey is a new recruit to the Arsenal ranks after joining them from Barcelona over the summer.  Caldentey was in the Spain side who beat England in the 2023 World Cup final.

A host of England’s star players from last summer’s Women’s World Cup finals are also in action for teams in the capital.  England captain Millie Bright along with Lauren James and Jess Carter are part of a Chelsea squad  joined by Lucy Bronze who returns to the WSL after two years at Barcelona.  Meanwhile, Beth England is key to Tottenham’s progress.  Across London, striker Alessio Russo is part of the Arsenal squad along with two other Lionesses in the shape of Leah Williamson and Beth Mead, who both played a huge part in England’s historic EURO 2022 triumph.

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

London City Lionesses and Charlton Athletic are the teams representing the capital in the 2024/2025 Barclays Women’s Championship season.  The Lionesses have a new home venue at Hayes Lane Stadium in Bromley.  Charlton are based at The Oakwood in Crayford.

SEASON SO FAR: London City Lionesses – many people’s tip for the title after they were bought last season by Michele Kang who also owns Washington Spirit and Lyon’s women’s team – are top of the league on 41 points, just 2 points ahead of second-placed Birmingham City It’s all to play for in the race for promotion to the Women’s Super League.

Charlton Athletics made a superb start to the season, rattling off four wins and one draw from their opening five matches.  Their form stuttered over Christmas but rejuvenated in 2025 they have climbed up to third place, 7 points behind leaders London City Lionesses.
