A place in the Championship is at stake as Charlton and Sunderland go head-to-head at Wembley Stadium in the League One play-off final. Kick-off is at 3pm and tickets for Charlton fans are currently on general sale.
All football eyes will be on Wembley Stadium this afternoon as Charlton Athletic take on Sunderland in a rematch of the extraordinary 1998 play-off final. It was 21 years ago this weekend when the teams met in the Division One (now the Championship) play-off final that finished 4-4, Clive Mendonca scoring a hat-trick for Charlton to take the game to penalties with the Addicks eventually prevailing 7-6.
Will it be south-east London repeat or a Sunderland revenge in the 2019 edition?
To the current League One campaign and it was Sunderland who led Charlton for much of it, however the Black Cats who faltered at the end of the regular season while Lee Bowyer’s men maintained their great form to leapfrog Sunderland and Portsmouth on the final day.
With precious little to split the sides the team that copes best with the intense Wembley spotlight today is likely to progress. On penalties? Don’t rule it out!
Route to the play-off final: Sunderland did what they needed to do over two legs against Portsmouth in the semi-final, progressing after scoring a solitary goal but keeping two clean sheets in the process. Meanwhile a dramatic 4-3 second leg penalty shootout win over Doncaster Rovers saw Charlton secure their place in today’s final.
Kick-off for the League One Play-Off Final is at 3pm.
