A rugby union showdown to savour to end 2017 as Glasgow meets Edinburgh in the second leg of the 1872 Cup.  Known throughout the rugby world as the oldest club fixture in history, the 1872 Scottish Cup is one of the most eagerly anticipated dates on the Scottish rugby calendar and this year’s version is set to be the most intense encounter yet.  Having broken a 5-year losing streak in 2014 Edinburgh Rugby retained the trophy the following year only for Glasgow Warriors to take the bragging rights last season including a 25-12 win at Murrayfield.

For the first time this season the 1872 Cup is following a “best of three” format in parallel with the expanded PRO14 league.  The final meeting of the sides is scheduled for the weekend of the 28th April at Murrayfield.

Last weekend’s first leg was a thriller with Edinburgh Rugby battling against adversity to secure a memorable come-from-behind victory.  Down to 14 men after just 5 minutes after Simon Berghan was sent off the Edinburgh side never gave up and their resolution was rewarded when Chris Dean touched down in the dying seconds to secure an 18-17 win.

Not only was it a memorable 1872 Cup victory for Edinburgh Rugby it was also a result that ended Glasgow Warriors perfect record in the PRO14 of ten straight wins.  Expect the Glasgow side to be hell bent on revenge this afternoon in front of the Scotstoun faithful as they look to level the series in a match that is set to feature a raft of players from Scotland’s national team.

Kick-off 3.15pm.

Tickets for the 1872 Cup second leg are sold out.
