South Africa’s Ashleigh Buhai leads the way by defending the AIG Women’s Open title she won in 2022 after defeating In Gee Chun in an epic four-hole play-off. Buhai’s first major title saw her become just the second-ever South African winner of the tournament, following Alison Sheard’s victory in 1979.
Anna Nordqvist from Sweden is expected to join Buhai. One of the most successful golfers of her generation Nordqvist secured the third major of her career by claiming victory at the AIG Women’s Open at Carnoustie in 2021. Watch out too for the 2020 winner Sophia Popov who wrote one of the most heart-warming, rags to riches stories in AIG Women’s Open history when she won the 2020 title at Royal Troon. Ranked 304th in the world, Popov became the first German to win a women’s major.
Global superstar Ellie Goulding will perform a full headline set on Saturday 12 August following the end of play. The first ever music headline performer for the AIG Women’s Open, Ellie Goulding’s new album Higher Than Heaven hit the #1 spot in the UK albums chart in April making her tied with Adele for the most Number 1 albums by a British female solo artist.
