They’re under starter’s orders at Sandown Park in Surrey for a seven-race card at Imperial Cup Day, including two Grade 3 hurdles and a listed Flat race.

The standout race this afternoon is the Imperial Cup worth a total of £100,000.  First run in 1907 this prestigious hurdle race, taking place over two miles, has featured the likes of Olympian, Blowing Wind and Gaspara who have all gone on to win at the Cheltenham Festival after winning at Sandown Park.

With the famous Festival in Gloucestershire just four days away this afternoon’s racing is the perfect prelude for many.  Prior to the Imperial Cup (which goes off at 2.25pm), the Grade Three European Breeders’ Fund Paddy Power ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, is likely to attract a quality field with a prize fund of £80,000 up for grabs.

There are two Listed races on the card this year with the Listed Novices’ Handicap Chase, switched from The Festival, joining the British Stallion Studs EBF Mares’ Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race on the card.  Those two races take place at 3.35pm and 3pm respectively, while rounding off the afternoon (at 4.45pm) is the ‘3 Sleeps To Cheltenham’ Juvenile Handicap Hurdle offering an 11th-hour opportunity to creep up the weights ahead of potential Festival engagements.
