The waiting is over for the season-opener at Epsom Downs which has the Blue Riband Derby Trial as the centrepiece of an eagerly anticipated afternoon of racing. Will a Derby winner be on show in the big race on the card? It’s possible! Tickets are on sale now for the 2026 Spring meeting at Epsom.
At exactly midday the gates will open at this iconic racecourse in the Surrey countryside. Home of the most famous Flat race in the world, the first race at 1.35pm will mark the beginning of the competitive season which reaches a climax with the Epsom Derby Festival taking place on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 June.
The feature race of the day is at 2.10pm. The Blue Riband Derby Trial is unique in offering the winner an automatic entry to The Derby. It has an total prize pot of approximately £50,000.
There have been some quality winners of the race and none more so than 2017 winner Cracksman. The John Gosden-trained colt, ridden by Frankie Dettori, went on to win The Derby followed by the Champion Stakes at Ascot to finish the year as the top-rated three-year-old horse in the world.
In 2023, the Godsen and Dettori partnership struck once again with Epictetus taking the spoils in what was Dettori’s final appearance in the race after announcing his UK retirement.
Today’s seven-race card also boasts a number of valuable and competitive handicaps from which the winners are often horses to follow over the season.

🚊🚗 Travel tips: Public Transport is recommended. Epsom station is the largest nearby station. It’s served by South West Trains and Southern Trains, with connections from London Waterloo & London Victoria. Take a 10 minute taxi or bus ride from the station. Tattenham Corner station is approximately 1/2 mile walk to the racecourse. Epsom Downs station is approximately 1 mile walk to the racecourse.
