Tolworth Hurdle Day

🏇 Sandown Park Racecourse is the place to be for Tolworth Hurdle Day one of the highlights of the National Hunt January calendar.

Congratulations to Constitution Hill ridden by Nico de Boinville winner of the 2022 Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle and now destined for the Cheltenham Festival in March for a tilt at the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.  Stay tuned here for 2023 Tolworth Hurdle Day ticket news as soon as released.  And for spectator events coming up in London – including horse racing – visit our What’s On page.

What better way to spend the second Saturday of the year than at Sandown for some top quality jump racing action.  A total of seven races are on this afternoon’s card including the feature race, The Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1), run over a distance of two miles which is followed by the Veterans’ Handicap Chase.

There have been some famous winners of the Tolworth Hurdle over the years, none more so that in 1984 when the legendary Desert Orchid was first past the post.  The famous grey, known as “Dessie” to his legion of fans, would go on to win the King George VI Chase four times and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1989 cementing his reputation as one of the best jumps horses of all time.  The Tolworth roll of honour also includes impressive stars like Monsignor in 2000 and Summerville Boy in 2018.  And in 2019 the impressive Fiddlerontheroof powered to the finish to give trainer Colin Tizzard a memorable third win in the race.

This afternoon all eyes will be on Constitution Hill, trained by six-time champion trainer Nicky Henderson.  Touted as a future star after cruising to victory in impressive style as a novice in his first race at Sandown back in December, Constitution Hill is set to start as the hot favourite for the 2022 Tolworth Hurdle due off at 2.25pm.

The quality racing continues with the Veterans’ Handicap Chase over 3 miles at 3pm.  The race is the finale of a popular series for older horses that first took place in 2015.  Last year’s winner was the popular 13-year-old Seeyouatmidnight and 13 horses are set to feature in the 2022 edition with a prize fund of £100,000 at stake.  Between them the horses have a total of 65 race wins and one to keep an eye out for is Aso trained by Venitia Williams who has won 9 of the 41 races he has taken part and came a memorable second in the prestigious Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham Festival in 2019.
