5 January announcement by Sandown Park. Racing on Saturday 6 January is abandoned with parts of the course waterlogged. This is due to 34mm of rain falling on the track overnight. Ticket holders will be contacted directly by the racecourse. Stay tuned here for news of 2025 Veterans’ Chase Day tickets.
2024 RACEDAY PREVIEW
What better way to spend the first Saturday of the year than at Sandown for some top quality jump racing action. A total of seven races are on this afternoon’s Veterans Chase Day card. These include the feature race, the Veterans’ Handicap Chase over three miles.
The race is the finale of a popular series for older horses which has taken place since 2015. Last year a dream came true for Wishing and Hoping – trained by Mel Rowley and with jockey Alex Edwards on board – who sprang a big surprise winning the Veterans’ Handicap Chase and the first prize of £51,000 at odds of 50/1.
In 2022 Irish raider Prime Venture, ridden by Adam Wedge, took the spoils. 13-year-old Seeyouatmidnight was the winner in 2021.
This year the Veterans’ Handicap at 3pm once again carries a prize fund of £100,000. At 2.25pm the Class Mares’ Hurdle Race should attract a quality field with a prize pot of £40,000 up for grabs.

🚊🚗 Travel tips: Free car parking is available in the centre of the racecourse accessible from the More Lane entrance. Parking in the main Sandown Park car park off Portsmouth Road costs £5. Esher railway station – a 30-minute journey from London Waterloo – is the nearest one to course. Esher station is located outside of Zones 1-6. The station is a 10-minute walk from the main entrance.
