MATCHES SO FAR
On Saturday 2 November it was so near yet so far against New Zealand in the Autumn Nations Series opener. An exhilarating match ended 24-22 in favour of the All Blacks after England had led 22-14 heading into the final 10 minutes of the match. The hosts surged back to take the lead courtesy of a Mark Tele’a try in the 76th-minute. Still England had a chance to snatch victory, only for George Ford’s penalty to hit a post and then in the final play of the match Ford’s drop-goal effort drifted agonisingly wide.
England then faced a revitalised Australia side in a rugby Test match for the ages on Saturday 9 November. After the lead had changed hands a number of times it looked like England had seized the initiative courtesy of a Maro Itoje try in the 78th minute. But the visitors had not read the script. With the clock on 80 minutes, Max Jorgensen delivered a dagger blow of a try as Australia claimed a famous 42-37 victory in the latest edition of one of the oldest and biggest rivalries in world sport.
SO NEAR YET SO FAR
On Saturday 16 November South Africa came to Twickenham primed and ready after they came through a tough test at Murrayfield. England raced into a 7-0 lead only for the world champions to bounce back and lead 19-17 at the break. The sides shared five tries between them in a breathless first half. Into the second half the hosts had their chances, but ultimately it was a tale of too many errors for England as the Boks gradually took control. A tense 40 minutes saw the visitors stretch their lead to 29-20 come the final whistle. And for the third time in a row it was a case of what might have been at England Rugby HQ.
