Day 1 of the Scottish Fencing Open 2017 at Oriam, Scotland’s national performance centre for sport. Scotland’s flagship event is a 6-weapon open tournament featuring some of the best fencers from Scotland competing for national honours. A weekend of high octane sporting drama is guaranteed and spectating is free!
The Scottish Open is a six-weapon fencing event held annually featuring action in the foil, epee and sabre disciplines. It is Scottish Fencing’s flagship event and one of the best opportunities available to see athletes competing at the highest level, with many of the top fencers from Scotland and GB in action including many Commonwealth medallists.
If you are new to fencing and not sure what to expect take a look at these highlights from the hugely successful Commonwealth Fencing Championships held in Largs in 2014.
Today’s competition starts at 9.15am with the first event, the Men’s Epee. Also taking place will be the Men’s Sabre and Women’s Sabre starting at 10.45am and 11.45am respectively. The qualifying rounds will take place throughout the morning and early afternoon, ahead of the Medal matches starting around 3pm. Medal matches take place in each of the three events. They consist of two semi-finals with the losers each receiving a bronze medal, and the winners going through to the final to decide who will win the gold and silver medal.
