Hillhead Jordanhill Women v Murrayfield Wanderers Women

Hillhead Jordanhill Women and Murrayfield Wanderers Women go head-to-head at Hughenden this afternoon in one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of the BT Women’s Premier League season.  Kick-off is at 2pm with admission on the gate.

The 2016/2017 campaign is approaching the business end with just a handful of matches remaining and it’s Hillhead Jordanhill Women and Murrayfield Wanderers Women who have broken clear from the rest of the teams in the league.  The Wanderers hold the advantage as things stand after their victory over Hillhead at the beginning of October, however that could all change this afternoon.

Murrayfield Wanderers Women are the current title-holders pipping Hillhead to first place last season, and after their opening day statement of intent – a 52-5 victory over Stirling County – the Edinburgh side have swept all before them this season including the aforementioned win over Glasgow-based Hillhead which came courtesy of a 38-24 scoreline.  A result that means Murrayfield Wanderers are top of the table on 40 points with Hillhead in hot pursuit on 36 points, both sides having played 8 matches.

This afternoon Hillhead Jordanhill must win (see below for points available) if they are to have a realistic chance of claiming the title, and Murrayfield Wanderers dare not lose if they are to avoid a winner takes all encounter on the final day of the season.  Yes, you guessed it, Sunday 15th January 2017 is the date for Murrayfield Wanderers v Hillhead Jordanhill and rugby neutrals can be forgiven for cheering a home win today that would pave the way for a grandstand title showdown.

Points ins and outs: It’s 4 points for a win and 5 points for a  bonus point win, the latter applicable if scoring 4 tries.  Beating a team by more than 7 points also stops the defeated team gaining a a losing bonus point.

One to watch: Jade Konkel.  Scotland’s first full-time professional women’s rugby player is hoping to get her first taste of competitive rugby action since returning from injury.  That being the case if the match goes to the wire the Hillhead Jordanhill forward could just be the difference that tilts the match in favour of the Glasgow side.

Kick off is at 2pm.

Admission is on the gate priced: Adults £5 ~ Students £3 ~ U18s FREE.
