The waiting is over for American Football fans. Following the success of last year’s NFL London – which saw victories for the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos -American Football has a history in the UK stretching back to the 1980s with the launch of NFL Europe. That came to an end after 12 seasons, but not before sparking an interest in the sport leading to the international series in 2007.
PREVIOUS GAMES AT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM
After a break for Covid the series returned in 2021 and in 2022 it saw two matches played at the magnificent Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. First up, Minnesota Vikings got the better of New Orleans Saints 28-25 in a thrilling match watched by over 60,000 fans. With just under two minutes of the game left, Saints levelled the scores at 25-25. Overtime looked on the cards, only for Vikings to snatch the victory courtesy of a Greg Joseph field goal with 24 seconds left on the clock. The following weekend New York Giants overturned a 14-point deficit to beat the Green Bay Packers 27-22. The showdown was the Packers first game in London.
In 2023, Jacksonville Jaguars finished two wins from two at NFL London. The Jaguars beat Buffalo Bills 25-20 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, to complement their victory over Atlanta Falcons at Wembley Stadium seven days earlier. Congratulations also went to Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens beat Tennessee Titans 24-16 in Tottenham to close the NFL show in London for 2023. Ravens kicker Justin Tucker was instrumental to his side’s victory. Tucker kicked all six of his field goals and contributed 18 points to the Ravens total.
2024 & 2025
In 2024, Chicago Bears cruised to a 35-16 win over Jacksonville Jaguars in the second match of 2024 NFL London at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was the star performer throwing four touchdown passes. The result marked the Bears straight win at Tottenham. On the opening weekend, Minnesota Vikings, repelled a furious fightback from New York Jets. Aaron Rodgers and his Jets team went 17-0 down before storming back to close the gap to just three points. But the Vikings held their nerve to win 23-17.
Last year it was the turn of Minnesota Vikings (who beat Cleveland Browns 21-17) and Denver Broncos (who beat New York Jets 13-11) to reign supreme.
